Fans and critics were spellbound by the intricate puppetry and gorgeous music. Directed by Julie Taymor and produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, it kept all the characters and emotional beats of the original film, but brought a bold creative vision to every aspect of the story. However, accidentally catching bugs removes the seeds.Based on the 1994 cartoon The Lion King, the musical version debuted in 1997 to great acclaim. For every ten seeds collected, an extra life is awarded at the end. In the bonus round, the player controls the boar Pumba, who must catch the melon seeds that fall from the top of the screen.

Other items that can be collected are extra lives and continues, as well as diamonds that allow you to play a bonus round after finishing a level. Among them are health restoration, temporary invincibility, and upgrades for Simba's roar and slash power. In most levels you can collect various power-ups, many of which come in the form of bugs. Several stages end with boss fights against the likes of a hyena and an orangutan, and the last level consists solely of fighting the main villain, Scar. Only the adult Simba can slash enemies directly with his paws, while both can use their roar to temporarily stun and jump on top of enemies to defeat them. The two forms differ slightly in their abilities: young Simba can roll sideways, damaging enemies in his path.

In the first six, Simba is a cub, from level seven onwards he is an adult. The player controls the young lion Simba through ten levels, all of which are based on locations from the movie.

The version for Sega's 8-bit systems is based on the 16-bit version and has the same general gameplay and level themes, but its own level designs and other differences.
